It is with great sadness that I must write to inform you that Mike Lubbock has peacefully passed away with his family around him in the early hours of Wednesday 11 January.
Mike and his wife Jill moved to Woodbridge in 1961 where the family embarked on a 47 year involvement with Woodbridge School. Mike was a proud Leicester Tiger scrum half playing on 96 occasions between 1955 and 1961.
Having retired from rugby Mike was involved with Suffolk, Eastern Counties and London Division as a coach and selector. In 1969 Mike was one of Woodbridge Rugby Club’s founding members helping to pull together local, like-minded individuals to form Woodbridge RUFC. In 2006 Mike was awarded the Torch Award presented by the Duchess of Wessex as national recognition for his work with rugby. In 2007 Mike received the Suffolk Sport Lifetime Achievement Award followed by an invitation to a Buckingham Palace Garden Party.
Mike was our first Club Captain and led the Club as President for 24 years. He remained so immensely proud of the success and growth of the Club, which has been built to provide a family friendly, community rugby club for future generations.
Mike’s family and friends are in our thoughts at this sad time.
On behalf of Woodbridge Rugby Club
