For the third consecutive year, the Sports Vilage at the Suffolk Show once again played host to a vibrant and engaging rugby arena, This year, however, brought an exciting new dimension as Woodbridge RFC joined forces with Ipswich YM Rugby Club to promote the sport of rugby across Suffolk over the two-day show.
The collaborative spirit between the two clubs created a dynamic and welcoming environment, drawing in attendees of all ages and abilities. The rugby arena became a hub of activity, offering a fantastic opportunity for boys and girls to participate, fostering a truly inclusive atmosphere that celebrated the diverse appeal of rugby.
A series of interactive and engaging activities were organised to provide a hands-on introduction to the sport. The tackle bag and crash mat, always a popular activity was relentlessly busy. Precision and accuracy were put to the test at various target stations and a new addition, the tackle bag ‘coconut shy’ was a fun game helping to develop passing skills .Experienced coaches and enthusiastic volunteers from both Woodbridge and Ipswich YM were on hand throughout the event to provide guidance, encouragement, and information to those curious about taking up the sport. Their passion for rugby was infectious and we would like to thank them for giving up their time to promote grassroots rugby.
The successful collaboration between Woodbridge and Ipswich YM bodes well for the future of community rugby in Suffolk and we look forward to doing it all again next year!
The Amazons and Warriors End of Season Ball provided a memorable and fitting finale to a season for the various teams. It was a night dedicated to celebrating the collective spirit and individual contributions, acknowledging both the peaks of success and challenges encountered along the way. The atmosphere was electric, a vibrant blend of camaraderie and well-deserved revelry as players, coaches, and dedicated supporters gathered to mark the season’s end.
Despite the inevitable ebb and flow of results across the different squads, the End of Season Ball served as a unifying occasion, a chance to focus on the shared passion for rugby and the bonds forged through teamwork and commitment. The evening was filled with laughter, reminiscing about key moments, and appreciation for the efforts of everyone involved. It was a time to let loose and celebrate the hard work put in throughout the year.
A highlight of the night was the eagerly anticipated presentation of awards, recognising those individuals who had truly stood out and made a tangible difference to their respective teams and the wider club. These accolades went beyond mere on-field statistics, celebrating players who embodied the club’s values, demonstrated exceptional leadership, unwavering dedication, and a positive impact both on and off the pitch.
While the specific award categories and recipients remained the club’s closely guarded secrets until the night, the anticipation was high. The recognition of these key players underscored the importance of individual brilliance within the collective team effort.
The Awards were:
Players player: Amazons: Lou Warriors 1XV: Lewis Jacobs Warriors 2XV: Ed Johnson
Coaches back: Amazons: Kylie Warriors 1XV: Jake Hateley Warriors 2XV: Barney Harper
Coaches forward Amazon: Charlotte Warriors 1XV: Aldis Salavejs Warriors 2XV: Henry Butler
Iron man/woman: Amazons: Bethan Warriors 1XV: Jamie Smith Warriors 2XV: RickBerry
Most improved: Amazons: Katie Warriors 1XV: Kyle Barrett Warriors 2XV: Alex Pelekanou
Beyond the formal proceedings, the End of Season Ball was, by all accounts, a resounding success in fostering team spirit and letting off steam after a demanding season. The numerous reports of sore heads the following morning served as an undeniable testament to a night thoroughly enjoyed, a clear indication that the celebrations went long into the night. It was a fitting way to draw a line under the season, forging lasting memories and strengthening the bonds within the Amazons and Warriors family, leaving everyone looking forward to the challenges and triumphs of the next.
The Rugby Club’s Members End of Season Ball marked the spirited commencement of the club’s end-of-season celebrations. This event brought together a diverse cross-section of the club’s community, with tables filled by enthusiastic members from the Juniors and Minis sections, the seasoned VETS, and the long-standing, loyal supporters of the club. It was a testament to the inclusive spirit of Woodbridge Rugby, uniting generations and different facets of the club in a shared evening of jokes, shots and dancing!
Unlike some end-of-season gatherings, this particular ball was not focused on individual accolades or award ceremonies. Instead, the emphasis was purely on celebrating what has been widely regarded as a fantastic season for Woodbridge Rugby Club as a whole. It was an opportunity to reflect on the collective achievements, the shared experiences, and the strong sense of community that defines the club. The atmosphere was relaxed with appreciation for everyone’s contribution throughout the year.
The evening’s entertainment added a touch of magic and rhythm to the proceedings. Guests were treated to captivating magic performances, sparking wonder, curiosity and amusement throughout the room.
Adding to the evening’s atmosphere were the traditional fundraising elements that are always a hit at club events. The Heads and Tails game, a classic and much-loved staple of any rugby ball, provided plenty of lighthearted entertainment and a chance for everyone to get involved. Following this, the raffle drew significant interest and successfully raised a fantastic amount of money for the club’s ongoing endeavors. However, the fundraising highlight of the night came with a truly special auction item: a Juniors rugby shirt signed by the legendary Johnny Wilkinson himself. The bidding for this unique piece of memorabilia quickly escalated, becoming quite heated as members vied for the prized possession. Ultimately, the hammer finally fell at an extremely generous £500, with the winning bid coming from the ever-supportive Geoff. In an incredibly selfless gesture, Geoff then immediately donated the signed shirt back to the club, a testament to his unwavering generosity and commitment to Woodbridge Rugby.
As the evening progressed, the energy levels rose with the tunes expertly supplied by DJ Tel, ensuring a packed dance floor and a lively atmosphere. The music provided the perfect backdrop for members to mingle, catch up, and celebrate the successes of the season in an informal and enjoyable setting.
The Members End of Season Ball successfully set the tone for the club’s end-of-season celebrations, providing a wonderful opportunity for everyone connected with Woodbridge Rugby to come together, enjoy each other’s company, and raise a toast to a truly great season.

A massive well done to our formidable Vets team who continued their incredible run of form with a decisive victory over Colchester’s Vets, metaphorically “demolishing” the Roman Ruins! This impressive win marks a remarkable two full seasons undefeated, a testament to their skill, commitment, and camaraderie. However, this sustained success does present a new challenge: we are sadly starting to run out of willing opponents! If any other veteran sides out there fancy testing their mettle against our dominant force, please do get in touch – we’re always up for a good contest!
Senior Sides Rested and Ready for Mistley Showdown
With no fixtures on the calendar, our senior male players have enjoyed a second consecutive weekend of well-deserved rest. We trust this downtime has allowed them to fully recharge their batteries and shake off any lingering knocks in preparation for a crucial weekend ahead. The intensity ramps up with a return to twice-weekly training sessions for the next two weeks. This focused preparation will be vital, and we may even continue these double sessions after Easter, depending on the progress of our Suffolk Gold Cup campaign.
Double Header Derby Day Against Mistley Promises Fireworks
This weekend sees a highly anticipated Mistley double header, with both our senior sides in action against their counterparts. The 1st XV will be making the journey to Essex, while the 2nd XV will be hosting Mistley at Hatchley Barn. There’s plenty riding on these encounters! For our 1st XV, a victory would be particularly sweet, allowing them to leapfrog Mistley in the league standings and secure a commendable 3rd place overall as the season draws to a close. Meanwhile, our 2nd XV face a formidable challenge as they aim to be the team that finally brings an end to Mistley’s impressive 100% league record at the very last hurdle. We wish both teams the very best of luck in what promises to be a thrilling afternoon of rugby! Get down to Hatchley Barn to support the Warriors 2nd XV, or travel to Essex to cheer on the Warriors!
Suffolk Gold Cup Final Spot Up for Grabs
The anticipation is building for the Suffolk Gold Cup semi-final next weekend at Ipswich YM. The winners of this eagerly awaited clash will have the honour of hosting Southwold in the final. With Southwold already securing their place, the stakes are high, and there is absolutely everything to play for as teams battle it out for a coveted spot in the showpiece event. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the semi-final result and will bring you all the latest news on our own potential involvement.
You are invited to show/share your support to the beer festival, which you will now know is an annual fixture in our calendar.
Based on feedback and attendance figures from the past two years, we’ve decided to streamline the festival to two fantastic days this year.
The festival will take place on Friday, 6th June, from 6:30 PM (with a Sponsors Happy Hour from 5:30 PM) and on Saturday, 7th June, from 1:00 PM (with a Sponsors Happy Hour from 12:00 PM).
There will be live music, fantastic food to soak up the beer and not forgetting the now famous Touch Rugby Tournament that will take place on Saturday afternoon. We welcome back Charlie Law who will be hosting the popular MIC on the Terrace for our open mic session. Click on the image below so you can see the poster more clearly. EARLY BIRD TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW!!!!
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: We are so reliant on wonderful volunteers for the duration – whether that’s pulling a pint, serving at the Spirit Bar or keeping a safe eye on the young ones as they bounce around on the bouncy castle or just help direct a visitor to what they need….we need you, simply!! Please contact us on beerfest@woodbridgerugby.net if you can help.
Staging an event of this nature naturally involves significant costs, even more so this year, sadly, and we are once again reaching out to our generous supporters for their assistance. We understand that economic conditions can present challenges, but we sincerely hope you will consider partnering with us again this year.
We have a few options to sponsor for the festival, and you can see below what is available. As of this week, we can offer a dual sponsorship on the cups along side Greene King, so splitting this cost 50/50 – this needs to be locked down in the next couple of weeks to get designs in place. Also the Gin & Rum Bar which will now be a specialist Spirit Bar has been taken.
If you are able to sponsor a cask this year, please do get in touch: beerfest@woodbridgerugby.net. To help us with the smooth organisation of the festival, we would be grateful if you could submit your sponsorship before the end of May.
Match Report: Woodbridge 2XV vs. Harwich & Dovercourt – The Match of the Century
It was a day of great expectations and lower-than-average tackle techniques as second-placed Woodbridge 2XV hosted third-placed Harwich & Dovercourt in the most eagerly awaited clash of this season, at least. For the record, Mistley RFC are still top, which is honestly none of our business.
Before the game kicked off, bets were being taken in the warm up on who would “take out” the giant Harwich had bought with them, a 7ft tall number 8 with biceps bigger than most Woodbridge players thighs, and who would seemingly dwarf even Eben Etzebeth…
The game kicked off with the usual absurd amount of aggression, as both teams clattered into each other like two shopping trolleys filled with bricks. It was clear that both sides had come for a game of rugby, not to mention a few early injuries. Maybe not to each other, but let’s be honest, who isn’t here for a bit of carnage? The first 10 minutes were an orgy of big hits and questionable decisions, before someone finally remembered we were here to play rugby and not just make each other’s bones rattle.
In the 11th minute, Scott Backhouse decided enough was enough and muscled through the Harwich defence like he was pushing a shopping trolley in a packed supermarket, breaking free after a solid scrum by Woodbridge No. 8, Henry Butler. Try was unconverted, because that’s just the way we do things here. 5-0 to Woodbridge.
The next 7 minutes were just a blur of brilliance from Sam Jackson, who scored, then scored again (because apparently Harwich had forgotten that they could actually tackle him). Both tries were unconverted, but let’s be real: does anyone really care about conversions at this point?
Then came the pass. In the 27th minute, Jackson threw a “NO YOU DICKHEAD!!”, “SAM WHAT THE F$$k!” “NO SAM!!!” “How in the hell did you do that?” “This guy doesn’t play this level”, 50-yard pass straight to Sam Cornebey, who somehow knew what was happening, and caught the ball, before running it over for another unconverted try. If that wasn’t ridiculous enough, Jackson then broke the line again, threw an inside pass to an almost full speed Barney Harper (who nearly scored but got dragged down, just to add drama), before popping it to Ed Johnson who did the exact same thing. Fortunately, Jackson finished what he had started, making it 22-0 in the 29th minute, with the conversion (finally) in, albeit perhaps by accident.
The score line started resembling a video game, with Backhouse barrel-rolling through the Harwich defence as if their defence had gone on a short break, making the score line even more impressive. But, of course, Harwich decided to show up in the 36th minute, finally scoring a converted try to make it 27-7. But don’t get too excited, Harwich fans; Woodbridge weren’t having any of it.
Tom Frohn then waltzed through the Harwich defence in the 38th minute like he was performing on strictly come dancing, and manoeuvring through players like they weren’t even there. It like watching Swan Lake, as he scored under the posts. After this majestic play, the dazed and startled referee asked for a 60 second pause while he digested what had just happened. Try was converted. 34-7 at halftime. It could’ve been 100-7, but we’ll just leave it at that.
HALF-TIME BREAK
The second half began like a bad sequel, with Sam Jackson picking up right where he left off—scoring again in the 44th minute after sidestepping three players to make it 48-7. Harwich tried to get a bit of respect back in the 56th minute with a converted try, but it was as useful as a chocolate teapot. 48-12.
Then, like clockwork, Sam Jackson intercepted a pass from Harwich’s No. 10 in the 58th minute and sprinted down the field for another converted try. 55-12, and Harwich were probably wondering what the hell just happened.
Tom Frohn had another cheeky run into the corner in the 61st minute, but the try was unconverted. Still, who’s counting at this point? The score line was beginning to look like a rugby version of Monopoly – a game that only one team was winning, and that team was Woodbridge. In the 68th minute, Barney Harper ran through Harwich’s defence with such speed that it looked like he was being chased by a bear or maybe he is actually the real Flash…? Try unconverted, but it didn’t really matter.
In the 70th minute, Henry Butler capped off the performance by busting through the Harwich defence from a scrum play like he was a hot knife through butter. Try scored. Converted? Who cares?
Jackson put the final nail in the coffin in the 76th minute, finishing in the far corner after another strong run, making it 76-12. Harwich managed a token consolation try in the 79th minute (converted), but by then, the damage was done. The full-time score was a brutal 76-19.
Full Time Score: Woodbridge 2XV 75, Harwich & Dovercourt 19
