The End of Season Training & Awards Day

Hatchley Barn was once again very busy on Sunday morning/lunch time for what was the last training session of the season for the Minis and Juniors.

The U7’s made the most of the day with both children and parents dressing up as super heroes and having a great time, although the outfit wore by Coach Ben does bring some disrepute however very funny!

It’s been a fantastic season for everyone involved in this section of the club. Our players have performed extremely well at all the festivals attended, trained hard during the season and with many of the older children going on tour, we have been proud to see them returning back to the barn with silverware in hand.

Sunday was also awards day for the players and it’s fair to state that there were so many awards to be handed out!  With squads covering U6s-U14s, we have been pleased to see so much growth and potential achieved for every player and without doubt, every child was worthy of the medal given out.

The coaching team handed out awards dedicated to the most improved player of the season, the player’s player of the season and for the older groups even the Parent’s Player of the season.  Dedicating each award came with great difficulty as these could have easily been given to multiple players for each team, but it just shows what a great bunch of players we have in our squad and an amazing talent pool to call upon in the future.

We have been graced with the presence of so many Mini and Junior players this season and without the support of our coaching and facilities teams, none of this would be possible.  Also, the support given by Woodbridge School as our sponsor is gratefully received as this allows us to invest in the facilities and provision for our Minis and Juniors players.

As at many end-of-seasons, it is sometimes bring great sadness as some of the coaches and backroom staff decide to hang up their boots.  However, this does allow others to step up to the challenge for the following season!

This season we say goodbye to the following: (Although we’re sure they will still be helping out in some capacity)

  • Daniel Clementson – U6’s.  A lot of patience is required for coaching players of this age and Daniel’s displayed the one of the friendliest faces to support the induction of the newest players to the club.
  • Matt Cobbold – U8’s.  Matt’s provided solid leadership to our club and has instilled a level of readiness to all the players as they now progress towards contact play.
  • Ian Bowley from the U9’s, who has been an amazing and well-loved coach, the team have come on leaps and bounds this season and they have almost been unbeatable at festivals under his guidance and tuition.

So, to leave this on a positive note we have the following thank yous:

  • Jenny and the catering team…the coffee/teas and breakfast baps have provided warm sustenance on the coldest of days!
  • To the Parents and Guardians who have tirelessly been taxi driver, chief supporter, kit cleaner, stand in coach and general dogs’ body who have stood on the side line in all weathers.
  • Our Junior Chair for co-ordinating and making all this happen.

Finally, to all the Minis and Junior players at our club, you have all been outstanding, awesome, wonderful and the best!  The coaching staff, the parents and the leadership team at our club are all very proud of you.

Train hard during the summer, we look forward to welcoming you back at the Barn next season.

A Day of Celebration – Mike Lubbock

We were joined by over 200 people to celebrate the life and achievements of Mike Lubbock.

Some had travelled wide afield including Dubai, Africa and America   Many familiar “old faces” and reunions remade along with stories of the good old days and reflecting on Mike being the driving force behind our club.

Whilst a day for reflecting and remembering – it was ultimately a great Woodbridge Rugby Club and Woodbridge School day with the sun shining at our rugby church, Hatchley Barn.

The game between the Club and School OWs did not disappoint. Tom Stokes pulled together two wonderful squads.  For most of the game it was very close with the lead swapping regularly.

In the end the club pulled away to seal the victory and turn round the score from their first encounter on Tollers Field at Woodbridge School in 1969 with the final score  42-19 to the club.

It was fitting for the occasion to include Simon Bennett taking the ball on for the first half, I got to start the game with the kick off and for both Edward Fletcher and Timmy Johnson to take the ball on for the second half.

It was great to have Chris Leek present and reminisce about that first game that he also played in with both Edward and Timmy.  It was also fitting for our chairman TJ Johnson to captain the school side and for Tom Stokes to captain the club.

Finally, a huge thank you to Claire Brickley for refereeing the match.

Mike would have absolutely loved the occasion.

It’s Match Day – Mike Lubbock Memorial

Welcome to the bank holiday weekend!

Come and turn back time today with our Woodbridge Veterans taking on Old Woodbridgians at Hatchley Barn in memory of Mike Lubbock
Mike was our club’s first Captain. He was also a well-loved coach and he spent 24 years as President.

Kick-off is at 2.30pm, the clubhouse will be serving a selection of hot food and refreshments.

A bumper crowd is expected so bring your family and friends down to the Barn and cheer the old boys on.

If you are feeling energetic and fancy dusting the boots down, please feel free to come along and get involved.

Great Win For The Warriors – Papa John’s Cup

It was a typical spring day in Newmarket which in turn dished out weathers of all sorts towards both of the teams on the pitch, and spectators!

However, it was our Warriors that turned out the victors in the end in what was a hard pushed match against Newmarket RUFC in the Papa John’s Cup.

The overall score was built by a great team effort and with a hat-trick of tries from Tom Lomas and one more from Ed Banthorp, this contributed to the final 19-29 scoreline.

Well done lads!

Celebration of the life of Mike Lubbock

We have been overwhelmed by the lovely words sent by so many who knew Mike through rugby, the club that he was devoted to, and as a teacher.

To celebrate his life, we are linking with Woodbridge Rugby Club and the Old Woodbridgians on Saturday 29th April 2023.

The afternoon will start with a short service where we will remember Mike and his achievements and then we hope to be treated to a game in his honour between Old Woodbridgians and Woodbridge Vets.  The bar will be open and food will be available.

We have set up a MuchLoved tribute page in Mike’s memory which supports St Elizabeth Hospice. You can add a story, pictures or donate if you wish.

We would be grateful if you could let us know if you would like to attend (or even play!) via the rugby club at clubops@woodbridgerugby.net by Wednesday 19th April.

Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible.

Best wishes
Jill, Jo, Sarah, Adam and their families

The U7-U12 Development Festival 2023 – Thank you

We were pleased to see everyone there having such a great time at our Minis Development festival this year.

The sun was shining bright, the BBQ was ablaze, the kitchen was busy and there were so many smiles on people’s faces which was pleasing to see.

The cake and sweet stall were a sell-out, but the best part of the day was our chance to see the children play rugby against other clubs!

The quality of the rugby played by all those teams involved was phenomenal and it’s fair to say that this is reflected in the quality of coaching provided too. This generates great hope for the continued growth and success in rugby across East Anglia.

We would like to thank the following:

  • Those players and coaches that participated in this year’s festival. You all demonstrated great sportsmanship, matching the values of our club and rugby in general.
  • TJ & Claire (Chairman and Junior Chair)…and their families, for organising the festival.
  • All the helpers and volunteers at WRUFC, without your support these events simply don’t happen, you made this day a success!
  • The parents/guardians who supported the children from all the clubs attending, leading with celebration and support to all the players on the pitch.
  • Finally, Woodbridge School, who sponsors our junior teams. This partnership is helping us grow our future.

Please don’t forget to order your photos from the festival from www.DEphoto.biz
